21165 gets new wheels

The CRHS is proud to announce we've purchased a new set of 4 wheel and axle sets for the 21165! When we picked up the 21165 in Sands Point, the discovery was made that the wheels currently under the caboose were thin and the flanges were extremely sharp (Flanges should be curved). This is unacceptable for regular use on the M&H and for shipping to be painted. With that in mind, a search was launched to find a new set. A set was found in Sharon, PA at American Industries thanks to Rod Ruby of Renovo Railcar. Once the funding was secured through your donations, train shows, and our basket bingos, the date of May 15th was set up to pick up the wheels.

On that date, CRHS members Kris Klemick, Russ Swinnerton, and Sean McDonnell set out for Sharon, PA with our truck driver, Matt Sweger in search of our wheels. The wheels were loaded in Sharon about 1PM and returned to Middletown, PA where they were offloaded at the M&H Railroad (The Caboose's current home). The move went safely and the wheels should be under the 21165 soon!

***UPDATE*** As of 5PM on May the 24th, the 21165 HAS NEW WHEELS UNDER HER! Today, JB Kerr, Kris Klemick, Ryan Emrick, Sean McDonnell and Russ Swinnerton labored long and hard to get the new wheels under the caboose. With the help of John Pullman and the M&H it went very smoothly. There were a couple of tense moments, but the 21165 is now safe to roll along the line.  Photos will be posted soon!

May 24, 2008 we began the intense task of jacking the caboose up, rolling out the old wheelsets and rolling the new ones back underneath!
With cribbing securely in place we began slowly jacking the caboose into the air.
All of our planning is coming together and the caboose is airborne!

The gang noticed when the trucks were rolled out that they were stenciled for PC 18505...here's JB Kerr cleaning off the markings
PC 18505 was a class N11 cabin car...somehow her old trucks made it under the 21165 at some point.
The entire process rolled along very smoothly like this set of wheels did after being removed from the caboose
Before each new set was placed underneath we made sure to clean and lube the king pins, bolster and other pertinent equipment
