Conrail GP38 7899 was assigned to the Conrail Shared Asset Area after the split in 1999 as NS 2943. The locomotive was one of several SAA allocated units that were cycled through the locomotive shop in Altoona and emerged still in Conrail paint. In 2001, local shop forces took the opportunity to prepare a rolling billboard celebrating "25 YEARS OF SAFETY AND SERVICE" while NS 2943 was being serviced at Conrail's Pavonia Diesel House near Camden, NJ. The locomotive was adorned with in house lettering celebrating "The Spirit of Conrail". The Spirit was eventually sidelined in Altoona and selected as a future rebuild program candidate, but not before posing one last time as the centerpiece for the Conrail Historical Society 2008 convention group photo.
