Wrecks and Accidents

There was one ex PC Alco C636 that never physically made it to Conrail. PC 6330 was destroyed in a 3 train wreck at Leetonia, Ohio on 06-06-1975. Here are the remains 2 days later in this Dennis Bydash photo. It would have been CR 6780. The fireman was running the train and was the only fatality. 7 others were injured.

A couple of days earlier when I was talking to the contractors, they thought I only wanted the logo. By the time I got there on this day, "CONRAIL" was already cut right through the middle. At least the logo and "QUALITY" were saved. Talk about heavy though... sheesh!!
CR 3184 4-27-79 Wilkinsburg, PA. Conrail SD40-2 6480 and GP40 3184 were running light (helpers returning from assisting a road train over the grade) when they were sideswiped by derailing or overhanging equipment from an adjacent track. The GP40 derailed and crashed through the concrete abutment/retaining wall and plunged down onto South Avenue. Fortunately, this happened when there were no vehicles waiting at the traffic light visible just beyond the underpass.

B36-7 5052 was the middle unit in a consist of 3 B36's that were involved in the Chase, Maryland wreck on 1/4/87. In a poorly scanned print, we see the damaged 5052 sitting in Enola pending disposition in late January, 1987. She was eventually rebuilt, went to CSX after the split and renumbered to 5805, and now toils away in a different form in Brazil.

That's right, the 6485 was involved in an accident in early 1995 and received cab damage. So the cab from GP35 2380 was swapped onto the 6485 to complete repairs. A photo of the fresh 6485 in Quality blue is coming! Photo taken at JLS on 6/2/95 by Terry Nardella, collection of Steve Ondik.
