GE B23-7

Finally, the sun clears the cloud deck just in time for this SPL301 which cruises along Muddy Pond at 09:10. I believe, but cannot confirm, this is a set of new M6 "Metropolitan" commuter cars being delivered to New Haven. Older M2 and M4 cars transiting offsite for work were usually just hung on the end of a symbol freight.

The early 80s were a strange time on the Pittsburgh Line. Here a pair of light road units provide assistance up the hill, shoving behind two different cabooses.

SPSE-0 passes over Factory Brook and Town Hill Rd. coming into Bancroft (Middlefield station), MA. on Dec. 30, 1982. B23-7 1901 leads three 2800 series B23-7's. Can you recognize the difference between the two in this photo? There is a minor feature visible in any view looking down the sides of the locomotives.
6
The most B23-7's I've ever seen at one time, trains PIME-15 and ZWW-619 meet near New Castle,Pa on March 15th, 1981. The Conway to Meadville train had 1908,1934, and 1904 and the Shenango to Weirton ore train had 1902, 1906, 1925, 5914(GP-7), 1912, and 1921 for a total of 8 B23's and 1 geep. Both leaders went to CSX in the Conrail split.

The operator at "Castle" walks over to hand up a set of 19's to train ZWW619 as a local crew looks on. The train has ran over the P&LE from Youngstown to here and is entering the Youngstown Line via the connection. That's the Youngstown Line curving off to the left. Castle was a tower at one time, but a fire resulted in this trailer becoming the control point.

Nearing sunset, eastbound SENH drops down into Bancroft, MA. at 19:00 on the evening of July, 1, 1982. He's the first of three trains which will make a great ending to this day.

SPSE going away with B23-7's from both groups. Too bad the weather didn't stay like this for the succeeding trains!

CR 1904 leads RESE past MP 129 in Becket, MA. on July 1, 1982. With the start-up of Metro-North in Jan., 1983, the 1904 was one of seven B23-7's (1903-1909) which were transferred to the commuter agency along with 71 other locomotives, about half of which were FL-9's.

Conrail B23-7 1936 is seen again on the same train in 1991, this time approaching the viaduct over the Little Conemaugh River between South Fork and Mineral Point, PA. For some reason the train has crossed over to track 1 to run against the flow of traffic instead of using tracks 2 or 3.
