A GE center cab numbered 99 did briefly exist on the CR roster (separate from the black one numbered 9999 they inherited from Penn Central back in 1976). I believe it came from the Housatonic as trade toward the GP35's Juniata did for them in the early to mid 1990's. I think it then went to Amtrak. I remember seeing it parked along the shops in Altoona in a red/white/blue/silver scheme very similar to Amtrak's around that time frame. __________________ CR roster fanatic |

It was painted up in the current Phase IV paint scheme and until now I had wondered where they had gotten that unit. I'm thinking its a 44 tonner based on the design of the body, but cannot say for sure. Perhaps this unit is the one Steve talked about, but since I didn't get a number nor any photos(we were running short on time sadly) I cannot say for certain one way or the other. __________________

Most railroads eliminated 44 tonners and such a while ago, and this one has been through Housatonic, Conrail, and now several years of Amtrak. Hope it finds its way to a tourist line or museum when Amtrak's done with it. __________________

I will have to dig out my all time CR roster and look it up but that's on a disc somewhere and not on the drive in this computer. Let me get back to you tomorrow with more info (if I can find it)!

The above is a picture of the unit I am referring to. 80 ton GE built as US Navy 65-00363, went to DSA 58275, then to Housatonic as their #18 and was painted green. (I believe it was traded to CR in return for the rebuilt GP35's Juniata did for the Housatonic.) Conrail used it as a Juniata Shop switcher around 1996. Then it was rebuilt for Amtrak as their 99 and then went to American Glass at New Stanton, PA where this photo was taken. Hope this helps clarify what engine is/was being discussed.
